Eurotown Guben-Gubin

As a result of geopolitical changes of the 90-ties of the 20th century the border with Poland has changed its function and became the "Gate to the East". The border town Guben had earlier recognized the opportunities that this process offered and got involved into the cross-border cooperation.
The basis for mutual planning and development of Guben and Gubin is the "Spatial Structural Concept of the Euro-Town Guben-Gubin" elaborated in 1998. The guiding idea of the cross-border plan for development of the two towns has been taken into account in the general strategy of development of Guben.
The main intention of the mutual concept is to continue development of the town based on two centres focusing on mutual restoration of the functional arrangement. The cross-border axis shall be Frankfurter Stra├če, being the functional connection of the Guben centre with the new centre of Gubin.
The sustainable cooperation between the two towns has been developing since 1991. For the past 25 years the towns have implemented together many projects being of great importance to the citizens of the Euro-Town, such as the common waste water treatment plant or the island on the Neisse river as a meeting venue. Since 2015 members of the Town Councils have been working together within the individually set up Polish-German Board "Euro-Town Guben-Gubin" , making mutual cross-border decisions. Furthermore, the cooperation established between the Town Halls of the two towns is still being developed. Big and small European projects were and have been implemented in partnership, whereas such events as New Year's meetings or the annual festival are organized regularly together upon the Neisse river and contribute to development of mutual understanding Owing to the financial support offered by current and earlier European cooperation programme INTERREG Brandenburg- Poland, it has been possible to implement big and small cross-border projects, such as improvement of the greenery, modernization of the mutually used surroundings of the railway station, health care on both sides of the Neisse or carrying out many ceremonies and meetings in Guben and Gubin.
